"No one nor anything can silence me."
His Early Life-

Dmitri Mendeleev was born on February 7th, 1834 in Tobolsk, Siberia. He was the son of Ivan and Marya, had 13 other siblings. His father died when he was very young, forcing his mother to go back into work to support her family. Dmitri was determined to get a good education, as he promised his mother. He was naturally interested in science. A few months after the Mendeleev family moved to St Petersburg and Dmitri enrolled as a science teacher his mother died of tuberculosis.

His Work-
Most people say that Dmitri Mendeleev created the periodic table of elements, when in fact, he only rearranged it. One scientist that was around him stated,

  • "He began his first column with lithium, an alkali metal, followed by beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine. His next column, in order of atomic weights was sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, phosphorus, sodium and chlorine. he noticed a second column of seven, with fluorine and chlorine in the same horizontal row. He noted chemical properties of the elements were grouped into families. He left gaps in his table to locate the next element in its proper family and predicted properties of undiscovered elements that would fit these spaces."
This is a copy of Dmitri's early work.

And his idea was confirmed to be true when scandium, gallium, and germanium were discovered. He designed the periodic table by atomic number (number of protons) instead of the earlier atomic mass. It took him many tries to get it perfect but he did get it, and it was perfect.

As his friends said he shouted a lot, "There is nothing in this world I fear to say!"

Really?

He was supposedly the person who brought the metric system to Russia. He was the director of the Bureau of Weights and Measurements.
He became known for his long hair and large beard. It was said that he would only cut it once or twice a year.
Every letter appears on the periodic table except one, J
He has a crater on the moon names after him, as well as an element; 101- mendelevium.

This is what Dmitri's final copy looked like, with the blanks for the undiscoved elements.

What Happened because of him?
Scientists now have a great way to categorize elements, and can predict what man-made elements will do. Now that there is a clear pattern, scientists know what elements have what properties and they don't even need to know the name of the element, just where it lies on the periodic table. He helped change the science world, and gave a whole new meaning to the word organized.

"The most all penetrating spirit before which will open the possibility of tilting not tables, but planets, is the spirit of free human inquiry. Believe only in that."
